If you’re a K-12 teacher, principal, counselor, or aide at a state-certified school, don’t forget about the educator expense deduction. In general, you can deduct up to $300 of unreimbursed expenses on your 2025 income tax return ($600 for married couples filing jointly if both spouses are eligible educators), even if you don’t itemize deductions. Eligible expenses may include classroom books, supplies, equipment, and technology, as well as certain professional development costs related to your role.
Beginning in 2026, a new miscellaneous itemized deduction for educator expenses will also be available, creating additional opportunities to claim qualifying costs. As always, it’s important to keep receipts and maintain clear records of eligible purchases throughout the year.
